THE BOYNE VALLEY DRIVING ROUTE
The Boyne Valley is listed in the Top 21 Historical destinations in the world along side Machu Pichu and New Orleans by the BBC History Magazine February 2013.
The “Boyne Valley Drive” takes in the heritage sites in the area including Bru Na Boyne (Newgrange) Monasterboice High Crosses, Old Mellifont Abbey, Hill of Tara, Hill of Slane, Trim Castle, Kells and much more.
BATTLE OF THE BOYNE VISITOR CENTRE
This histories house and museum tells the story of the largest battle ever fought on Irish soil involving over 60,000 men. There are regular events during the summer months.
COUNTY MUSEUM DUNDALK
Displays the only car ever made in Ireland, the Heinkel.
NEWGRANGE AND KNOWTH, BRU NA BOYNE
Neolithic monument with passage tombs.
This is a World famous heritage site and date back to before Stonehenge or the Egyptian Pyramids at around 3200 BC.
OLD MELLIFONT ABBEY
The remains of the first Cistercian Monastery in Ireland founded in 1142 by Saint Malachy.
TRIM CASTLE
Trim Castle is the largest Anglo Norman castle in Ireland. The film Brave Heart was filmed at the castle.
HILL OF TARA
Seat of the high kings of Ireland, the Hill of Tara has been an important site since the late Stone Age.
